In each cup of coffee we drink the major issues of the twenty-first century-globalization, immigration, women's rights, pollution, indigenous rights, and self-determination-are played out in villages and remote areas around the world. In Javatrekker: Dispatches from the World of Fair Trade Coffee, a unique hybrid of Fair Trade business, adventure travel, and cultural anthropology, author Dean Cycon brings readers face-to-face with the real people who make our morning coffee ritual possible. Second only to oil in terms of its value, the coffee trade is complex with several levels of middlemen removing the 28 million growers in fifty distant countries far from you and your morning cup. And, according to Cycon, 99 percent of the people involved in the coffee economy have never been to a coffee village. They let advertising and images from the major coffee companies create their worldview.

This is some of the finest coffee in the world!  It is wild
coffee and has been shade grown high in the coastal
mountains.  No chemicals or fertilizers have been
applied to the soil nor sprayed on it.  The coffee is then
sun-dried before being brought down the mountain and
shipped to the USA.

Before leaving Colombia, the coffee has been certified
by the
National Federation of Coffee Growers of
Colombia, and was tested.  The coffee is rated as
"speciality coffee" and has great flavor, very low acidity,
very low after taste, good balance, and a sweetness due
to its wild growing process at perfect altitudes and
extremely clean water sources.
Our partner in Colombia is Fundarcultura, a not-for-profit
foundation based in Medellin.  For the past nine years it
has been working with the indigenous communities of
the La Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Mountains order to
assist them generate a stable annual revenue base to
support a higher degree of political and economic
autonomy in their self governance.

Ancestral Coffee, Inc. is the USA distributor
of coffee from the indigenous pueblo
communities of the
La Sierra Nevada de
Santa Marta Mountains, Colombia;  the
Koguis, the Arhuacos, the Wiwas, and the
Kankuamos.  They are the last remaining
surviving people of the ancient
Tayrona
culture.
Fundarcultura works year-round with the pueblo's and is now
preparing for the next harvest.  To support this hands-on
development work in such a remote and environmentally
critical area, Ancestral Coffee, Inc. is sharing the profits from
the sales of this coffee in the USA.

Our level of profit-sharing far exceeds the current normal
global
Fair Trade practices and is based on a model
developed directly with the Council of Elders of the four
pueblo's.

Our intent over the next few years is to build the USA and
global distribution of this coffee into a sustaining
economic-base for the pueblo's in order to support their
community development projects.

We are in the process of obtaining organic and Fair Trade
certifications for next year's harvest in order to meet the global
standards of quality for our product.

We welcome your assistance in helping us grow this brand so
that the peoples of the pueblo's can maintain their
independence while they help us all in keeping the balance of
the planet.
